Freelancing on the Sabbath: Holy or Unholy?

by Shoaib on July 10, 2010

Despite the fact that the majority of the world no longer observes a “sabbath” as such, it used to serve as a day off from work. Since the internet entered all our lives, there was nothing we couldn’t do on a Saturday or Sunday. For freelancers this means that we can work on the weekend too, but would this be a wise move? So speaking non-religiously, is it holy or unholy for business to work on the weekend?

Holy

Many freelancers will argue that a day can be taken off elsewhere in the week and one could easily get through their massive to-do list over the weekend. There is no need to collect children from school or reply to emails (because people usually assume that your off for the weekend).

Freelancing can be addictive, because the majority of us will freelance in a field because we love that field. A friend of mine is freelance web designer and he enjoys working on the work he does. In fact, he enjoys it so much that even in his breaks he loves designing. Look at me right now, my passion for writing has got me typing away at this article despite it being a Saturday. No matter how much you enjoy it, however, you should take a day off, even if that be on a weekday.

Taking a day off during the week is great because there will be no queues at shops, not much traffic elsewhere and it is easy to have private/romantic time. These are just some of the many advantages of working on the weekend and taking a weekday off.

Plus, who has the right to tell us to not work when we want? If one is more productive working on the weekend then why not? Perhaps the most important advantage of working on the weekend is if your business requires it. As a freelance photographer you may be required to work regularly on the weekend because of wedding and other events usually being on the weekend. If this is the case, it is vital to work on the weekend.

Unholy

Take the example of a freelancer who is working on a project and needs to know about some extra details regarding the project. He can not get in touch with the client because the client may be taking time off on the weekend. Any correspondence with clients can be an issue but on the weekend, you are asking for trouble.

A day is needed off and what better than taking the same day off as the rest of the world. There is no real advantage to it because other commitments will interfere. For example, if I was to work all weekend, my wife and daughter would not be pleased! And what is the use of freelancing if you will not enjoy it with your loved ones?

The Conclusion

Depending on your own situation, you know what is best for you. If you are a family man/woman it will probably be really hard to work on the weekend, and a freelancer who is single and lives alone can work on the weekend if it suits him. Also it depends on what is necessity and what is not, as it may be that you lose out on a lot of business by not working on the weekend. Beyond that it all boils down to two things:

1. Are you able to work on the weekend?
2. Will you be productive?

If you can work and will be productive, do it. Otherwise don’t. Now, subscribe to our RSS for more awesome content!
