A Sexy Blog: 5 Reasons Freelancers Need One

by Shoaib on July 8, 2010

Setting up a WordPress blog is so easy my daughter could do it. If you don’t have a blog yet then you are seriously missing out as a freelancer. Writing on your blog has numerous advantages and below are the main reasons why you should be blogging as a freelancer.

Whichever field you are freelancing in, blogging is a cheap and excellent way of marketing your services. Just look around you and you will see that so many freelancers are waking up to the advantages of blogging.

1. Traffic

A great idea is to have a blog connected to your portfolio because by generating traffic to your blog you are ultimately getting more views on your portfolio. The more people who come to your blog, the more people will come to your portfolio and thus the likelihood of getting work increases.

What’s even better is that since you will be blogging about your own field, search engines will pick your site up more. If you are a freelance designer, the chances are you’ll enjoy reading Smashing Magazine. You will probably have opinions and preferences in the world of design and by expressing them through your blog you will not only attract other designers but generally a larger audience.

2. Give something back

I always feel that hoarding wealth, knowledge and love is a sin. This is the primary reason I set up this blog and wrote Clientophilic Freelancing. I am filled with joy to advise freelancers with the knowledge I have gained through experience and learning and it would be selfish for me to keep it to myself. A blog is an excellent medium for giving something back. Just try to think about someone who has really helped you in your career. That person was giving something back and it is time for you to start doing the same, that’s what distinguishes a civilized society and a barbaric society – compassion for your fellow man.

3. Impression

I know so many freelancers who think that they do not know much and are inexperienced while the contrary is true. Believe in yourself and blog about your opinions and experiences and you will leave a good impression. There is always someone who will agree with you and even if they disagree with you, they are more likely to have rapport with you. Just by giving your opinion about something you will attract attention and respect. This leads nicely on to…

4. Opinions

The other day I got annoyed at a coder who was taking forever to code my project and when he did, there was like two million mistakes and the code was not showing up as valid. When I asked him to sort this out he took another few days to get it done and guess what – the code was still not valid! I picked up the phone, rang Taiyab and ranted my brains out to him.

Another way of letting off steam is to rant about it on your blog and share your opinions. Whatever you feel strongly about, if you blog about it you are more likely to get attention and therefore get more business. Don’t rant for the sake of ranting, just channel your feelings into a more open platform and let other people engage with you.

By blogging about your opinions you’ll let off steam, and get the chance to make your case to potentially thousands of other people in your field.

5. Networking

Blogging helps you get conversations started between you and other people in or around your field. This is an awesome way of networking with fellow freelancers. I mentioned Smashing Magazine earlier, but despite primarily discussing design, they attract all kinds of freelancers from many different fields. This will happen with your blog and once you have a reader base (even if its small) the people who are your common readers are more likely to refer on business.
