You may have considered jumping into the dark realm of freelancing before, maybe you’ve done some freelancing on the side whilst in your current job. You might have found it quite interesting and rewarding, but you’re hesitant to make the leap into full-time freelancing. You have your reasons, but here’s why they’re nonsense.
1. You Need Job Security
You feel that your current job is stable and that you won’t get fired anytime soon. The idea that a standard job gives you stability is a fallacy within itself, there’s is no guarantee that you’ll keep your job, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get fired the next day. Businesses are laying off jobs at an alarming rate, and with government policy (in the UK especially) set to cut public sector jobs by hundreds of thousands in a bid to cut government deficits, unemployment will run rampant. In essence, your job isn’t secure, especially in our current economic climate.
2. You Like Being Employed
You may enjoy your stale, zombie-like nine to five that you need to endure 5-6 days a week. You may like working for a douche of a boss and enjoy being spoken down to like a child – but we can’t all be like you, right? People are beginning to realize that there are better ways of making a living than just being employed by someone else. After all, someone who is in standard employment is virtually just a pawn/soldier in the grand scheme of the business they’re working for – there’s no real benefit to them then to just have enough to survive.
You might be thinking, “but hey, I earn $xxx, xxx as an employee!” – well, in order for that business to be hiring you on profitable terms, you obviously need to be making more than what you’re paid in salaries. The normal multiplier is around 3-4 times the salary they’re paid, and hence your productivity is bringing the business a lot more wealth than it is to your own pockets.
3. You Have Family Responsibility
We now come to the point which actually have some validity to it. You could be the sole bread-winner for the family, and hence you have a responsibility to provide a good level of income to support your family. This is one of the main reasons why people in general tend not to make drastic moves, and stay very conservative when it comes to finances. You’re correct in playing it safe when it comes to having to provide for your family, after all, you don’t want them to suffer for your mistakes. However, there is a flipside to the arguement as well.
If you’re inspired and motivated enough to really give freelancing a go, you’ll always find ways, whether through desperation or not, to make ends meet. Maybe you’ll formulate and execute an innovative marketing campaign, really get out and network with loads of potential clients, work hard – whatever it takes, you’ll do it.
4. You Don’t Like Challenges
Now we come onto the boring lot. The people who enjoy the same mundane lifestyle day after day, the people who have no drive to achieve anything or make a change – the extreme social conservatives. If you’re one of these guys, reconsider your outlook on life, and really reflect on what you’re doing. Most of us aren’t like this, and we have huge aspirations, so much so that they can border insanity at times, and that’s the kind of attitude required to achieve anything in life, it’s how the great people of this world thought.
I’m not advocating that you quite your job this moment, and charge into freelancing head on, that would be foolish. Rather, think about the issue with a little more depth and really assess whether or not freelancing is truly for you.
